When was the last time you spent time in an ocean or in a river? Recently, I had the opportunity of kayaking down an historic river and splashing in the waves of the great Atlantic. In both occasions I had to fight the Drift. While kayaking it was difficult to stay true to our course because of the pull of the river. Swimming in the ocean was tough because of the push of the waves to the beach. In both cases it was difficult to go straight because the pull and push was so strong. It was difficult unless I concentrated.
On my first day back in the office I noticed the pull of my responsibilities and the push of demands from outside forces. I had to concentrate. Yes, it was tough, but I am trained to do that. I have had so much experience in business to know how to meet the demands of reality.
The real issue of the Drift occurs in your personal life more than anywhere else. Just like a river or ocean the pulls of responsibilities and the push of pressure cause people to drift away from their original course. The Drift moves us off course from our vision and our values. Over the span of time we look up and realize that we are off course and have been swept downstream. Staying your course requires concentration.
Get your bearings again. Concentrate. Move back to the center of your values and fight the Drift.
