Free Today

As I write this I am flying about 26,000 feet above Oklahoma on my way to Phoenix. I cracked open my Apple to begin writing and the most glorious words popped up on my personal calendar - Free Today.

Sweet words aren’t they?

The reality is that my Free Today was on a Sunday when I normally don’t have anything scheduled. Yet, it caused me to think about what I was planning to do. What would I do on a day where I was completely free? What would I do without responsibility, momentary duty or a “to-do” page staring me in the face?

So I listed my options. I could read (which I did). I could check out my new apps on my iTouch (which I did as well). How about some think time? I did that, too. Yet, more than those I gravitated towards writing… to you.

Now it is easy for me to write while trapped in the smallest seat on the airplane (avoid seat 19A on the B757-200 Delta plane - it is miserable). My choices for what I would do with “Free Today” while at home might be different than being on a plane.

So let me ask you now… What if at this very instant all of your appointments were canceled? What would you do? You are Free Today. Really, you are. What are you going to do with the time? Fritter it away or make the most of it?

I must admit that it is hard for me to handle freedom. I mean, I want it, but when I get it I have a hard time knowing what to do with it because in reality I am addicted to activity and responsibility. Know what I mean?

Freedom is hard. It is hard to know what to do with Freedom and very hard to stay Free. If you read between the lines here there is a deeper level of thinking to what I have just said.

Today, I choose to use my freedom to think a bit differently - to look at things with a new perspective and simply enjoy the fact that I am “Free Today.”
