The recent news of John Edward’s moral failure has led me to start asking a few questions. I wonder what it is in man that makes us want to play with fire (temptation that is)? I mean no slander towards John Edwards. Quite frankly he is just this month’s failed leader. I actually give him grace and mercy as he obviously became blind from the power of his position – a sort of state of invincibility.
I guess I just desire to stop all of us and ask even my self to wake up and shake ourselves out of any comatose nature of loving the things that hurt us. It could be too much food, too much drink, too much freedom, and too much dependence.
A good friend and great songwriter, Don Chaffer, writes the chorus brilliantly in his song “On Our Way to Crazy.”
Almost no one slides on purpose.
No one sells their soul for free.
Once we love the things that hurt us,
We’re on our way to crazy
We have got to lead ourselves first. That starts with our own evaluation. It is the process of freedom and self-control. If we don’t begin this process, we will wake up having slid way past comfort into an enslavement that is unimaginable. That is where “crazy” begins.

The one thing I notice that I, among many others, have done is I try to “love the thing that is hurting me” believing I can change that situation or that person. I know that is a little off from the heart of failure, but it seems to stem from the same issue. Pride. Believing “I can resist” or “I can fix” is a tough thing to work through.

An excellent summation of the message Luke 4 , where Jesus Christ is tempted but overcomes temptation…He models the need to lead ourselves first, before we try to lead others.
Thanks for presenting that critical message with a time relevant event.
